Learn How DTF Printing Works

The DTF printing business has revolutionized the printing industry and updated garment graphic creation in the digital age. Designers and manufacturers can now create digital artwork and print it on PET film and transfer it to clothing. Designing a DTF print pattern is as easy as designing on paper, your design is sent from your computer to the DTF machine and the printer does the rest.

1. The working principle of DTF printing

Direct transfer films work by printing transfers that are heat-pressed onto a variety of garments. There are many compatible fabrics, unlike DTG technology which only works with cotton fabrics. So this means this printer can work on wider substrates, making it the most adaptable digital printer on the market. DTF printer is suitable for both white and dark garments. Unlike DTG technology, DTF printers are preferred because they are affordable and require no preprocessing. For high quality results, you will need DTF powder and DTF transfer sheets to print the transfer film, and of course, DTF ink.

2. Understand DTF printing

Direct transfer film printer also combines reliability, unmatched quality and high productivity. They can handle mass production, which is critical in this fast-growing industry. Another advantage of DTF printing over conventional printing is that it is highly sustainable. There is no doubt that the fashion industry is increasingly focusing on sustainability.

Compared to direct-to-garment (DTG) printing, the DTF printing process is easier to get started with, freeing creators and artisans alike with a few simple adjustments to existing printers. From there, a simple four-step process makes the T-shirt feel softer than regular vinyl and offers better washability.

If you're wondering about DTF ink price and maintenance, they're about the same. You really just shake the cartridge, print with it, and clean the printhead with a foam swab. If the transfer is correct, slightly chalked up, and the ink level is right, the result will also be very soft and smooth. You're basically adding plastic to the wet ink in a layer on the back. The plastic is then pressed into the substrate as an adhesive. So now, the ink no longer sticks to itself like the DTG method, but has a layer of plastic underneath it. The larger the print, the more visible it is, though. In short, DTG may seem more practical, but obviously DTF printing is the easiest. If you're looking for a reputable way to start a business and want to maintain a quality product, you won't just print with DTF.
