Heat transfer vinyl (HTV) is made from polyurethane (PU) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and is also known as T-shirt transfer vinyl. It is commonly used to create designs on various textiles including sportswear, t-shirts, hats, shoes, and other fabrics. The process involves creating a design, cutting it with a plotter, weeding out the excess vinyl, and then heat pressing the design onto the fabric.
Heat Transfer Vinyl Uses
- Open cutting software and mirror the design horizontally.
- Move the image to the cutting area and adjust settings for heat transfer vinyl.
- Select 'smooth' or 'flocked' based on vinyl thickness.
- Load vinyl on the cutter with the clear plastic backing down and begin cutting.
- Weed the excess vinyl using a pin.
- Flip the vinyl so the plastic backing is up and place the design on the fabric.
- Press the vinyl at 150 degrees Celsius for about 30 seconds.
- Let it cool then peel off the plastic backing.
- If vinyl lifts from the fabric, re-press until it adheres properly.

- Turn off any steam settings and set the iron to the cotton setting.
- Place the iron on a smooth, firm surface.
- Iron the fabric to remove moisture and wrinkles.
- Position the design with the carrier sheet facing up, and cover with proof paper.
- Iron on the design with the recommended time and temperature.
- Press the iron from one area to another, ensuring even application.
- Peel off the carrier sheet according to the specific instructions (hot, warm, or cold peel).
